INNOCENCE

Kassius I King,
Innocence
2021

I planned an art show to reintroduce myself as an artist and “kill off” my old persona and name. I was going to take off my mask and reveal my struggles with substances and mental health through written and visual art. After going to therapy, I decided to keep my healing journey to myself. Profiting from it in any way other than helping someone else didn't feel right.

I would’ve gone over the brief history of my hometown and its formation. Detail how I used to feel a part of the community until a local called me the N-word in 2nd grade. This moment served as inspiration for the project that would be called INNOCENCE, where I had my then 6-year-old nephew paint over digitally altered Jim Crow-era images.

I thought it was to capture his innocence. But, in reality, it was my effort to rediscover any semblance of my own innocence or sense of belonging through him.

I didn’t give my nephew any direction. I just told him, “See how all these pictures are kind of dark? Take these paints and make them happy.”
